Newham Secures £1.5 Million to Accelerate Borough-Wide Place Making and Community Infrastructure

Newham Council has secured £1.5 million in capital funding from the Government’s Pride in Place Impact Fund, Cabinet heard today.

The money will add to a wider strategic neighbourhood investment programme that has already brought over £60 million into the borough over the past three years.

This programme takes a borough-wide, place-based approach, ensuring that investment responds to the unique needs and opportunities of each neighbourhood. Over the past three years, this has translated into transformative projects that strengthen local identity and community pride.

In the southwest, the Lower Lea Valley has benefited from investment into a new pedestrian bridge across the River Lea, alongside public artworks which were commissioned, and developed, in close collaboration with residents and local arts charity, the Line.

Work is also underway on a heritage centre in Canning Town set to open in 2027. Across Beckton and the Royal Docks, historic buildings such as the Tate Institute, Compressor House and Will Thorne Pavilion are being revitalised to provide new flexible community space for local use. These venues will be operated in partnership with community groups and will feature new food offerings alongside spaces for cultural activities and events.

In the northeast, improvements to high streets and local centres in Manor Park, East Ham and Green Street include enhancements to Queens Market, the revitalisation of Queens Square, and the creation of a new community hub. Meanwhile, in Stratford, Forest Gate and West Ham, affordable workspaces for artists and small businesses and start-ups have been delivered at Stock Street and Alice Billing House, complemented by public art installations that celebrate local character.

Together, these projects represent a coordinated programme of investment designed to foster inclusive growth and create vibrant, resilient neighbourhoods. The new Pride in Place funding will accelerate delivery in three priority areas—Beckton, East Ham and Stratford—where place-based visions are already shaping the future.

This includes advancing the Beckton Parks Masterplan, which sets out how we are providing new facilities; continuing improvements to East Ham High Street in partnership with the GLA; and extending the Stratford Vision cultural offer beyond the town centre to areas such as Maryland and Forest Gate South.

These investments build on a wider programme that has already supported regeneration in Green Street, Forest Gate, Manor Park, North Woolwich and Canning Town. Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE said:

"The £1.5million in capital funding is a welcomed addition to the investments we are making across our neighbourhoods, through our inclusive growth agenda and Newham Growth Plan to deliver tangible change across the borough for our residents.

“This funding will enable us to build on the success of our Neighbourhood Investment projects, which have already transformed town centres and public spaces through public art, enhanced public realm, activation of vacant buildings, improvements to parks and provision of vital community infrastructure."

The Council’s Community Wealth Building Place team, which successfully secured over £60 million in external grant funding, including £40 million through the Levelling Up Fund, will manage the delivery of the Pride in Place programme.

More information celebrating the neighbourhood investment programme and our plans to expand on its success will be posted on social media from the Council’s channels over the coming weeks.
