The Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz OBE has released a statement welcoming today's Government Budget.

“I welcome the Chancellor’s Budget, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to stabilising the economy, breaking the cycle of austerity, and investing in the future of our country.

Newham is one of the fastest growing, youngest, and most diverse boroughs in the United Kingdom, and I remain dedicated to fighting for the investment our communities deserve, so we can continue to deliver the best possible services in the fairest and most efficient way.

The Chancellor’s confirmation of the DLR extension to Thamesmead is fantastic news for Newham, improving travel in the south of our borough, while unlocking land for up to 25,000 new homes and 10,000 new jobs, and unlocking growth in this part of the capital.

I have long championed our local young people and their right to excellent education, healthy lives, strong career opportunities, and the best life chances. The Government’s decision to increase the Minimum Wage for 18-20-year-olds and provide a guaranteed work placement will positively impact thousands of young people across Newham, valuing their contribution to the economy. Locally, we will ensure these jobs are unlocked and accessible as we turbo-charge the youth guarantee scheme.

All the investments announced today from apprenticeships and education, to playgrounds will support our Building a Fairer Newham agenda, becoming the best place for our children and young people to feel supported and thrive.

For instance, the welcomed removal of the two-child benefit cap will help lift 16,000 children across Newham out of poverty, making a major difference to local families.  In addition, the Government’s support for children with special educational needs and disabilities will relieve the significant pressures facing Newham families in these tough times.

We know that 14 years of austerity has almost broken local government, with rising demand meaning that councils like Newham have to deliver much more with less. That’s why I welcome the Government’s Autumn Budget announcements which will help support our local communities.

As we build a fairer Newham, with the promise of opportunities, I’ll continue to advocate for our most vulnerable, protect vital council services that local families rely on, and deliver the transformation our borough deserves.

As your Mayor, I’ll continue to work for you and your family every single day as we drive forward our plans to deliver a better and fairer future for everyone in Newham.”
