Newham stands united in condemning the Bondi Beach Chanukah attack, mourning victims and supporting Jewish communities with reassurance and solidarity.
"Following the shocking antisemitic terrorist attack on members of the Australian Jewish community as they marked the first day of Chanukah on Bondi Beach in Sydney, here in Newham, we join in the global condemnation about the horror that unfolded.
"This evening, we solemnly think about the families impacted, mourning the 11 people horrifically killed at the start of the 8-day Jewish festival of lights, which is a celebration of perseverance, faith and freedom against oppression. Now those families will be in Avelut mourning.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with those families, and the 29 others injured, including two police officers and a Muslim local – all acting with courage to stop the perpetrators as the carnage was unfolding. These are extraordinary acts of bravery to be commended.
"Here in Newham, we stand united in condemning antisemitism and hate in all its forms, and of all acts of terrorism. In our borough, we are proud of our diversity, and we stand united in solidarity with all who face persecution.
"There will be fear and anxiety felt by many members of our Jewish community here in our borough, and the fear of reprisals will also be felt strongly by other members of our wider community. That is why we will support the efforts of our local police who will be providing reassurance during Chanukah for our Jewish communities in Newham, and safety for our wider communities.
