Newham continues to build on successes – delivering safer, cleaner, and greener transport options for residents

Royal docks corridor underpass

High quality project delivery continues to attract millions of pounds of investment into the borough’s sustainable transport infrastructure

A raft of new transport safety improvements will be presented to Newham Council Cabinet (Tuesday 20 January) next week.

The Council was successful in being awarded £4.5m from Transport for London for the delivery of projects in 2025/26, with an additional £1.6m being bid for in 2026/7.

Councillor Sarah Ruiz said: “Our commitment to building safer, healthier and more pleasant transport options for those who need to get around the borough and care for the environment has been an enormous success.

“Newham has been acknowledged as an example of best practice in this area, and last year our team were awarded the ‘Most Improved Borough’ by the independent Healthy Streets Scorecard in 2025.

“The fabulous £21 million Royal Docks Corridor (RDC) scheme is coming on stream now – and thanks to our careful management of the project we have an extra £5 million of underspend to invest in the further phases.”

The remaining RDC phases will:

  • Improve the key Connaught Bridge area that acts as a hub for a number of active travel routes converging in the centre of the Royal Docks
  • Create a new crossing of Silvertown Way at Canning Town roundabout to improve walking and cycling routes and reduce conflict between users at the bus station
  • Design an eastern extension to the RDC project to benefit both longer journeys and the local community in North Woolwich

Other transport improvements across the borough include:

  • Continued investment from TfL to transform Romford Road from the ‘Safer Streets’ and ‘Cycleway Network Development’ programmes
  • Major healthy streets projects on the Leyton Road, Barking Road, and Woolwich Manor Way corridors
  • Several smaller projects including the Water Lane crossing, multiple Healthy School Streets, bus priority projects on High Street Stratford, Prince Regent Lane, and Siding Street; cycle parking; and continued support for cycle training, travel planning for schools (TfL ‘Travel for Life’), Play Streets, road safety education and campaigns
