Newham Cabinet will consider a £2m upgrade to modernise CCTV, expand coverage and boost safety across high‑priority areas including Green Street, East Ham and Stratford with 20 new cameras planned.
Newham Council Cabinet (Tuesday 17 March) will discuss a project to invest £2 million to upgrade its CCTV network as part of its ongoing commitment to improving public safety. If accepted the programme will modernise the borough’s ageing camera systems, expand coverage, and introduce updated technology to better support crime prevention and detection.
The enhanced CCTV network will be prioritised in areas based on evidence and data, with new installations planned for Green Street, East Ham and Stratford.
Councillor Amar Virdee Deputy Mayor & Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Housing Need, Homelessness & Private Rented Sector said: “We have set out to ensure we are committed to doing everything within our powers to protect our residents and those most vulnerable to the impacts of crime and anti-social behaviour (ASB).
“By strengthening our approach to crime prevention and community safety, we are reinforcing Newham as a place to thrive, grow and live well.
“By investing in modern CCTV infrastructure and advanced technology, the Council is sending a clear message to residents, partners and visitors: Newham is a borough that takes safety seriously.”
The proposed upgrade will tackle:
- An aging radio transmission system
- Replace older or broken cameras
- Improve coverage in high-crime areas like Green Street, East Ham and Stratford
A further 20 new cameras will also be installed to improvement coverage at:
- East Village Area E20
- High Street North E12
- High Street South E6
- Barking Road E13
- Pier Road Foot Tunnel E16
“The programme also aligns with national and London-wide priorities to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour and restore confidence in neighbourhood safety, including the current Government’s “Take Back Our Streets” agenda, which emphasises visible action to prevent crime, protect communities and ensure public spaces are safe and welcoming. Furthermore, the investment complements the Metropolitan Police Service Estate Strategy, which focuses on modern, well-connected policing infrastructure and closer working with local authorities to support effective neighbourhood policing.
A modern, resilient and intelligent CCTV system is a critical enabler of this partnership-led approach—supporting rapid response, evidence-led investigations and proactive intervention
across streets, town centres and housing estates. By investing in modern CCTV infrastructure and advanced technology, this programme will help create safer streets, more welcoming town centres and better-protected public spaces—ensuring Newham remains a place where people feel confident, connected and able to live well and prosper”.
