Newham Council has delivered 28 affordable homes at Neil Wilson House in Plaistow, providing family-sized, low-rent housing and honouring a long-serving local councillor.
Newham Council has unveiled 28 new genuinely affordable homes at Neil Wilson House in Plaistow, delivering much-needed housing for local residents as part of the council’s ambitious Affordable Homes for Newham programme.
Named in honour of the former councillor, who served the borough for more than 30 years, it is built on the site of disused garages in New City Road.
The development provides 100 per cent London Affordable Rent homes, including a mix of one, two, and three bedroom properties designed to meet the needs of local families. The flats can accommodate up to 62 residents, while the houses can accommodate up to 41 residents.
Cllr Wilson was Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care and ward member for Plaistow South, he was widely respected for his dedication to public service and the residents of Newham.
Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz OBE, said: “Neil was not only a deeply respected colleague but also a dear friend to many of us. For more than 30 years, he served the people of Newham with compassion and an unwavering commitment to public service.
“Naming this local development after him is a fitting tribute to someone who cared so deeply about this borough and believed everyone deserved a safe, secure, and affordable home.
“Neil Wilson House in Plaistow will stand as a lasting legacy to his dedication to our community, while also helping us deliver the genuinely affordable homes our residents need.”
The homes have been delivered in partnership with Glenman Corporation Ltd through Newham’s direct housing delivery programme.
It has been designed following consultation with residents to ensure it reflects community priorities and complements the surrounding neighbourhood.
A spokesperson for the delivery partners said: “Glenman is delighted to have been involved in delivering this very impressive development of much-needed housing for the local residents of Newham. The development is a wonderful addition to the local area and should serve the community well for many years to come.’’
Careful consideration was given to the building’s appearance, with brick colours and patterns selected to match the character of nearby homes and strengthen the local streetscape.
Residents of nearby Jacobs House will also benefit from improvements as part of the project, including direct access and views onto a new communal garden.
A green-roofed bin store has also been installed near the New City Road entrance, helping improve the environmental sustainability of the site.
Additional upgrades to lighting at the Jacobs House entrance have also been introduced to enhance visibility and safety for residents.
By building on council-owned land and prioritising family-sized homes and accessible properties, the programme aims to ensure the new homes being delivered reflect the needs of residents while creating inclusive and sustainable communities.
