Canning Town is a feature neighbourhood at the London Festival of Architecture 2026 - a month-long programme of events from 6 - 27 June.
- Residents and visitors are invited to explore the area's transformation through guided walks, exhibitions, discussions and community events led by Newham Council, Ballymore, TfL, Cody Dock and other local organisations.
- The programme showcases how investment and regeneration is delivering over 10,000 new homes alongside new community facilities, as part of the council’s Growth Plan, and creating thriving neighbourhoods for the communities that call Canning Town home.
From 6 June, Newham Council alongside Ballymore, Tower Hamlets Council and Places for London, are hosting a series of walks, talks, exhibitions and cultural events across Canning Town and Leamouth, showcasing the area's transformation and the opportunities being created for residents and businesses.
As one of London's fastest-growing neighbourhoods, Canning Town is undergoing significant change. Over the past decade, major developments such as Hallsville Quarter have delivered new public spaces and a revitalised town centre. Future developments, including the Limmo Peninsula will continue to shape the area's future. Residents are encouraged to explore proposals and share their feedback at Limmo Peninsula public exhibition, launching at the festival.
The Council is currently developing a masterplan to deliver between 1,300 and 1,600 new homes at the Canning Town estates including 50% of these being affordable homes. Residents voted ‘yes’ to the regeneration of Canning Town Estates, and during the festival there are opportunities to discover how the regeneration proposals will bring together the existing community with those moving into the area.
The month-long programme explores this transformation through events focused on architecture, place-making, community and culture, all under this year's London Festival of Architecture theme of “Belonging”.
Mayor of Newham, Forhad Hussain, said: “Canning Town is one of Newham's most exciting neighbourhoods, with a strong community spirit and a bright future. The festival is a chance for residents and visitors alike to come together, explore the neighbourhood, and celebrate the changes taking place.”
The festival offers an opportunity to celebrate Canning Town's communities and culture. The Boat House exhibition space will be unveiled at Cody Docks as part of the festival.
The construction of Newham Heritage Centre is now nearly completed, opening at the site of Canning Town Old Library in 2027. The festival also includes several artist-led workshops for residents to get creative.
Canning Town is one of London’s best-connected neighbourhoods. The exhibition of emerging plans for the Limmo Peninsula (launching at the festival) will showcase the future riverside walkway along the River Lea. This forms part of a programme of local connectivity improvements including the Mayer Parry Bridge, where the Council recently achieved a key milestone of submitting a planning application. As part of the festival, residents will also have the opportunity to go behind the scenes of Canning Town Station.
Simon Ryan, Developments Director, Ballymore said: “This neighbourhood is a remarkable example of old meeting new in London – where a proud industrial heritage has helped shape bold and exciting contemporary architecture. The area has undergone significant transformation in recent years, and we’re proud that our own projects have played a small part in that journey. With much more to come, we’re looking forward to a Festival that celebrates the theme of ‘belonging’ and explores how architecture can bring people together this June.”
Residents and visitors are encouraged to take part in the programme and discover how Canning Town is evolving. View the full event programme below:
