Newham households will receive three free bulky waste collections every year – saving them up to £100 and helping keep our streets cleaner.
Mayor of Newham Forhad Hussain has today fulfilled a manifesto commitment by announcing the return of the free bulky waste collection service for every home in the borough from September.
Households will be able to book three free collections every year to take away up to six items of bulky waste – from TVs to tables, furniture and mattresses.
Mayor of Newham Forhad Hussain said: “Everyone I speak to agrees that fly-tipping is a blight on our borough. Local people are sick of seeing selfish people dump their waste on our streets and expect someone else to deal with the mess. Those days are over.”
The free bulky waste collection service is an environmentally conscious, responsible way to dispose of large-scale waste items that are often left illegally dumped on our streets.
The announcement is part of a raft of measures Newham Council is taking to crack down on fly-tipping, following plans to double the maximum fine handed out to fly-tippers from £500 to £1,000, hitting offenders in the pocket. Newham Council is also utilising its extensive CCTV network to catch fly-tippers in the act, with further plans to follow.
Local people are also encouraged to donate unwanted items for reuse, helping to support the community and reduce waste. Good-quality, clean furniture, white goods and bric-a-brac can be collected from your home for donation. They can find local options, including the TCL Reuse Centre on the Council’s website.
Alternatively, items can be taken to Jenkins Lane Reuse and Recycling Centre, where furniture, bikes, clothes, paint and books can be reused, while other items are recycled.
Mayor Forhad Hussain added: “Since becoming Mayor, I have been clear that we must tackle fly-tipping head on. We’ve started by doubling the fines for those caught illegally dumping their waste, making it clear that there are consequences for this behaviour.
“Now, with our free bulky waste collection service due to launch next month, there is absolutely no excuse for anyone to dump their waste illegally. We’re making it easier than ever for local people to dispose of unwanted items, and we’re taking tougher action against those who break the rules – this is just the start.”
