Mayor of Newham Forhad Hussain has today announced Newham’s biggest conversation about parking and kerbside spaces, with a resident consultation launching on 17 September.
The Parking and Kerbside Space Review consultation present comprehensive evidence inclusive of the views and experiences of local people and gain insight into how residents, visitors, businesses and customers want to use parking, kerbside and street spaces.
This will inform a long-term strategy that anticipates changes in the way we use our roads, supports the local economy, makes Newham more accessible and most importantly reflects how local people use their streets.
The consultation will ask households and businesses how they use our streets, including how they walk, scoot, wheel, cycle, drive and what challenges they face, and how they would like parking and kerbside areas to be managed in future to support residents, businesses and local neighbourhoods.
Mayor of Newham Forhad Hussain said: “Local people have told me that they want to discuss parking and kerbside spaces, and how we use our streets, so that we can seek solutions that balances the needs of everyone who uses our roads fairly.
“I was clear in our election winning manifesto that my ambition is to have a parking and kerbside system that supports a vibrant local economy, protects people against rising costs, and enables people to visit their local high street rather than being a barrier.
“That is why we are launching this consultation, so the changes we implement are driven by what the residents and businesses of Newham want to see.”
Cabinet Member for Adults, Health and Environment, Cllr Susan Masters shared: “We want the final strategy to reflect the views of local people. The only way to do this is for those who live, work, or study here to have their say. It is such an important topic that affects everyone, I want to see everyone sharing their view during the consultation.
“We need to use our street spaces in the right way, as changing demand is competing for finite road space and for that, we need an evidence-based approach and a long-term strategy.”
The consultation, which will run for 12 weeks until the 10 December, will give everyone who lives, works, visits or studies in Newham the opportunity to share their views.
The consultation will cover topics including:
- Car ownership and car use, to understand how many residents rely on vehicles in their day to day lives
- Cost of parking to understand the affordability of parking, and how parking charges affect you
- Availability of parking, including whether there is enough and your experiences of parking near homes and different destinations you visit in Newham
- Use of kerbside space, including how the space between roads and pavements are used
- Neighbourhood priorities, recognising that needs are different across different areas of Newham
- Supporting local high streets and businesses
- Future uses for kerbside space, including electrical vehicle options, outdoor seating and other community-focused uses
- Fairness and accessibility, making sure our streets work for everyone
