Mayor of Newham Forhad Hussain has today launched a Fly-tipping Wall of Shame to highlight offenders and provide a £100 reward for local people who help identify them.
It comes after persistent complaints of people illegally dumping waste, including furniture and electronic goods, on streets and at fly-tipping hotspots around the borough.
From today the council will publish CCTV footage of people caught in the act – while local people can claim a £100 reward for helping to identify them.
Mayor of Newham, Forhad Hussain, said: “Fly-tipping has no place in Newham. Our residents have told us they want cleaner streets and stronger action against the people who illegally dump rubbish in our neighbourhoods – and that is exactly what we are doing.
“Our new Wall of Shame will make it harder for fly-tippers to hide. If you recognise someone we share, tell us. Residents know their streets and neighbourhoods better than anyone. By working together, we can identify those responsible and keep Newham cleaner.”
Residents will be asked: Do you recognise them? Where officers have been unable to identify someone captured on camera, residents can view the footage and provide information directly to the Council.
Alongside the CCTV appeals, the Council is introducing a £100 fly-tipping witness reward for local people who help to identify those featured on the Wall of Shame.
To qualify for the £100 reward, residents must provide information that identifies an individual featured in a Wall of Shame appeal, and that information must lead to the offender paying a Fixed Penalty Notice or a successful court prosecution.
The launch of the scheme follows the Council’s recent announcement of free bulky waste collections for Newham households, making it easier for residents to dispose of large unwanted items responsibly.
It also builds on a series of Fly-tipping Action Days in locations selected by residents, including Rutland Road, St George’s Road, Bristol Road and Wakefield Street. A further Action Day is planned for Plashet Grove once ongoing roadworks are complete.
The Action Days brought together environmental enforcement, street cleansing and engagement teams to investigate dumped waste, speak directly with residents and businesses, and make local improvements to help deter further fly-tipping.
Mayor Hussain added: “Making sure that Newham is cleaner and safer is something that unites everyone in the borough and I am delighted we can now highlight the mindless actions of people caught fly-tipping.
“The Wall of Shame and £100 Reward Scheme is the latest step in the Council’s work to tackle fly-tipping - combining tougher enforcement with easier ways for residents to dispose of unwanted waste responsibly, including free bulky waste collections.”
