2000 Tomorrows: A new approach to supporting young people with complex needs

2000 Tomorrows brings together local authorities, NHS partners and professionals to improve support for young people with complex mental health, behavioural and social care needs.

We are so excited to announce that our 2000 Tomorrow’s Services are now in place and starting to take referrals and carry out consultations.

2000 Tomorrows are two innovative test-and-learn pilots bringing together local authorities, NHS partners and other professionals across North East London (led by Newham Council) and North Central London (led by Camden Council) to strengthen community-based support for young people living with highly complex mental health, behavioural and social care needs. At the heart of our work are small, clinically led, multi-agency and multidisciplinary teams providing additional expertise and support which can wrap around young people and families, and the services already working with them, to help prevent escalation and improve outcomes.

The project name, 2000 Tomorrows, was suggested by young people who have worked with us to bring this work to life. It refers to the numbers of days young people miss out on because they are not able to leave hospital despite being physically well enough to. This includes children in A&E, Tier 4 mental health beds and other wards across a range of health settings.

Some of our ambitions for 2000 Tomorrows include:

  • Promoting earlier intervention and earlier escalation into strategic discussions.
  • Enhancing relationships between health and social care.
  • Helping professionals understand each other's roles and contexts.
  • Supporting networks around children before situations reach crisis point.
  • Building confidence within the system to respond to children with complex health concerns.

Both pilots are supported by funding from the NHS North Central and East London (NCEL) CAMHS Provider Collaborative and working closely with London Innovation and Improvement Alliance (LIIA). Both pilots will be evaluated by our independent evaluation partner UCL Partners.
