Full parking enforcement resumes in July

Parking enforcement in Newham, which was relaxed in March to help support businesses and residents during lockdown, will resume on July 1.

Parking enforcement in Newham, which was relaxed in March to help support businesses and residents during lockdown, will resume on July 1.

As lockdown restrictions are gradually lifted and many people begin to return to work, Newham Council is re-introducing enforcement to ensure the borough’s streets and roads do not become clogged with parked vehicles.

During the relaxation period the issuing of parking permits was suspended and parking fines were only issued to owners who parked vehicles dangerously, on yellow lines, blocked junctions or caused an obstruction.

Residents whose permits expired during lockdown will receive letters next week informing them that we have started to reissue permits.

New permits are being issued for a maximum six-month period only, as from January 2021 the Council will be implementing a new paperless permit system.

Residents will receive a replacement first permit with their letter and online applications for second and third permit holders will re-open on June 17.

Although normal parking controls will resume for most drivers, free parking will continue to be available for NHS staff and critical key workers via an application process.

Councillor James Asser, Cabinet member for environment, highways and sustainable transport, said: “During lockdown, parking enforcement has been relaxed in residential areas as we sought to support people working from home, as well as ensuring London’s critical key workers were able to travel around the borough as easily as possible during this extraordinary situation.

“But as we gradually ease out of lockdown, and as people begin returning to work, we expect traffic levels to increase, especially by non-residents who may seek to park in the borough. We will be re-introducing full enforcement from July 1 to ensure that we are managing our roads effectively.”
