Mass Covid-19 vaccination centre at the ExCeL: Statement from the Mayor of Newham

“The Government today announced that the ExCeL centre at Newham’s Royal Docks in Custom House will be brought into use as a mass Covid-19 vaccination centre from next Monday (January 11).

The site, which was home to the London Nightingale Hospital during the first wave of the pandemic last year, will operate as a vaccination centre following a decision taken by the Department of Health and Social Care, in partnership with the NHS.

Newham’s residents have been disproportionately affected by the worst impacts of Covid-19, and we welcome measures to halt the alarming rise in infection rates. We understand the importance of rapidly escalating the vaccine rollout so that as many people as possible can get protection from this appalling virus – and so that we can all look forward to once more spending treasured time with friends, family and loved ones.

Newham Council will be urgently seeking assurance from Government about their plans to manage the flow of thousands of people each day to and from the ExCeL so that the vaccination centre can operate as safely as possible and with minimum disruption to local residents.”
