Quarantine Hotel in Newham: Statement from the Mayor of Newham

The Government has now confirmed that the London City Airport is one of five airports in England where people requiring hotel quarantine can enter the UK.

From today, anyone entering the UK will either need to quarantine at home or – if they come from a high risk country – they will stay in a government-approved quarantine hotel. They will also have to take Covid tests during their quarantine period.

Newham Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz said: “The safety of Newham residents is my number one priority and I am seeking a guarantee from the Government that Newham residents are not at risk from any failure to organise quarantine properly.

“I will continue to push the government hard to make sure they have the right plans in place to ensure that those arriving through London City Airport and into a quarantine hotel will not come into contact with residents until they are known to be virus free.”

“I am also concerned about the health and safety of staff at the airport and hotel, many of whom live in the borough. I want to know that they will be given the best personal protection equipment – masks and clothing – available.

“This is another area that we will monitor carefully, including talking to our trade union colleagues to identify any concerns that have come to their attention.”
