The number of folding bikes available for hire across Newham has been expanded to meet increasing demand from people wanting to cycle in the borough.
The expansion creates a network of 7 Brompton Bike Hire docks conveniently located next to rail facilities, making it easier for people to re-think the way they travel.
Last year, Newham Council opened Brompton bike hire docks at the following locations:
Next to The Crystal building close to the Royal Victoria Dock (DLR) station and the Emirates AirLine cable car
- Royal Albert DLR station
- Manor Park Elizabeth Line (CrossRail) station
- Maryland Elizabeth Line (CrossRail) station
- Forest Gate Elizabeth Line (CrossRail) station.
- A 16-bike hire dock was previously opened in Stratford.
The latest dock at the Newham University College Hospital in Plaistow opened last week. The Brompton Hire facility is part of a wider cycle hub planned at the site.
Hire charges begin at £3.50 for a 24hr hire. Compared to the lowest price of a Zone 3 travelcard at £8.20, the cost of a day’s hire is significantly
less than using public transport.
Jamie Blake Corporate Director, Environment and Sustainable Transport, said: “The arrival of the Brompton Bike Hire scheme has been a great success in Newham providing our residents with more choice in their active travel options in the borough. We know there is demand for both cycling and for cycle hire in the borough, and we’re pleased to be helping meet that demand so many people can opt to take more sustainable travel options for getting around the borough.”
