Statement following second stabbing fatality in Newham

The Metropolitan Police have launched a murder investigation following the death of an 18-year-old man in Canning Town this afternoon (Monday 26 April 2021).

The tragic incident in Coolfin Road, E16 happened at around 14:45, and is the second fatal stabbing in the borough in four days.

On Friday (April 23 2021) 15-year-old Fares Maatou was fatally injured in Barking Road E16. Earlier today a 14-year-old appeared at magistrate’s court charged with his murder.

Following today’s incident a spokesperson for Newham Council said; “We have been made aware of a second fatality in Newham today and want to assure our communities and residents that all partners are working together to ensure our communities and streets are safe.

“We know that at times like this tensions can run high and we urge calm whilst we and our partners come together to carry out the work that needs to be done to support those who have suffered.

“Our thoughts and condolences go to those who have been left bereaved by the sad events of today and Friday. We urge anyone with any information relating to either incident to contact the police.”
