Pupils at Gainsborough Primary School, West Ham, have dedicated a mural to Marcus Rashford at their school.

The gesture was a ‘thank you’ from students for the Manchester United and England footballer’s campaign work on free school meals during the Covid pandemic.

The mural, based on a photo by Paul Cooper, was sprayed on to the side of the school on 7 May 2021 by artist Josh Colwell of street art company MurWalls.

Founder of Murwalls, Marc Silver said: “It was a majority (of students) who came back and said that they want to do a thank you message to Marcus Rashford for all the help that he’s done supporting the food banks and the meal tickets and everything during Covid.”

The concept was developed by the students after the benefits they and their families received through the free school meals campaign.

More than a third of pupils at the school are eligible for free school meals, double the national average.

Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz OBE said: “No child should be hungry. In Newham we have put in place the Eat for Free Scheme to ensure that every child has access to vital nutrition. Thank you Marcus for supporting our ambition.”
