Newham Council is looking for people to put themselves forward to join the Newham Race Equality Alliance to progress some key work in tackling racial inequalities.

The Council is seeking an independent chair and eight people who can become members of the alliance to champion race equality across the borough.

The Newham Race Equality Alliance has a remit to help address the systemic discrimination and disadvantages experienced by residents because of their race or ethnicity.

The work aims to help tackle racial inequality as part of delivering the Council’s Community Wealth Building strategy - Towards a Better Newham.

Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz said:

“The Newham Race Equality Alliance will take forward a central agenda of the Council - to find practical solutions to the issues of inequality, racism and disproportionality. I hope people will look at the alliance and note its work but also get involved if they can.”

Councillor Rohit Dasgupta, Commissioner for Social Integration and Equalities said:

Diversity is central to who we are as a borough in Newham."

“We know that people from Black, Asian, and other ethnically diverse groups face multiple economic, social and health inequalities. Newham Race Equality Alliance will be an important forum for looking in-depth at how we tackle those issues and find solutions."

“I’d encourage people to come forward to fill the roles of independent chair and members of the alliance to progress this crucial work.”

Newham is one of the most diverse boroughs in the UK with 72 per cent of residents from Black, Asian, and other ethnically diverse groups.

The alliance has a series of objectives including; listening and learning from local communities and organisations to identify the specific challenges it should focus on and mobilising communities and institutions in Newham to advance race equality.

It will also advocate for residents to influence council services and decision makers locally and nationally to use their influence to tackle racial inequalities.

The alliance will report on the impact its work on race equality.
