Across Black History Month, Newham Council will host a programme of free events from music poetry, art and workshops on the theme of Ambition, Achievement, Inspiration.

For the full schedule visit www.newhamblackhistory.org.

The programme is part of Newham Unlocked, the Council’s cultural festival of events and activities that highlight the rich and diverse mix of creativity that exists in the borough, to ensure that residents get the chance to experience the richness of a vibrant and diverse cultural community.

Councillor Charlene McLean, Statutory Deputy Mayor and cabinet lead for community neighbourhoods said; “It is ever more important to recognise and learn about the history of Black people following the devastating impact of Covid-19 and the lockdown on our communities. The programme will explore those who have achieved success and how the future generation can be inspired by those successes. Black history month is a key part of Newham’s rich culture as we develop our inclusive culture strategy. ”

This year our programme consists of mainly in-person events, which will be held safely, following Covid-19 guidelines.
