Two Newham Parks proudly fly Green Flag Awards

Green Flag award

Two parks maintained by Newham Council have been selected to receive the prestigious Green Flag Award, Plashet Park retains the accolade for the sixth year in a row and this year Central Park in East Ham has been added to the list of award winners.

The awards recognise the valuable service Newham Council and all our volunteers provide in maintaining these green spaces for the community.

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of recreational outdoor spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.

Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz, said: “We are incredibly proud to have received these awards and having gone from one award winning park to two demonstrates our commitment to improving our green spaces in the borough.

“The Covid-19 pandemic truly highlighted just how valuable our parks and greenspaces are to our communities, Greening of the Borough is clearly more important than ever to our residents who selected it as their number one priority at our recent Citizen’s Assembly and we are now delivering a raft of improvements across the borough to support this further.”

Councillor James Asser, Cabinet Lead for Environment, Highways and Sustainable Transport said: “Our parks and open spaces have always played a vital role in bringing people together to enjoy themselves, stay connected and keep active, these awards celebrate that.

“I would like to thank all those people who have helped to keep them beautiful, safe and tidy and we will be aiming for even more Newham parks to achieve this standard next year.”

The flags were raised today (Friday) at Plashet and Central Parks by Mayor Fiaz, Councillor James Asser, Cabinet Member for Environment, Highways and Sustainable Transport, local councillors Susan Masters for East Ham North, Carleene Lee-Phakoe for Plaistow South, Zuber Gulamussen for East Ham North and members of the council parks team.

Commenting on the news that Newham has achieved the Green Flag Award standard, Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd said: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved in making Plashet and Central Parks worthy of Green Flag Awards.

“To meet the requirements demanded by the scheme is testament to the hard work of the staff and volunteers who do so much to ensure high standards of horticulture, safety and environmental management and is a place that supports people to live healthy lives.”
