Helping residents to age well in Newham

Newham residents will benefit from a wide range of support to live healthily in older age, thanks to a new Ageing Well Strategy agreed by the council’s Cabinet last week.

The Strategy provides a comprehensive approach to improving the health of residents aged 50+ and was co-produced in partnership with local health and care, services, community organisations, as well as many Newham residents who it will serve.

Cllr Neil Wilson, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care, said: “Newham is a young borough but we are committed to providing opportunities to residents of all ages and to helping them live healthily through every stage of life.

“Building a fairer Newham means making sure that people are listened to and our Ageing Well Strategy has been developed alongside our residents aged 50+, telling us what would help them to live active and healthy lives. I am glad that the Strategy has been approved and look forward to seeing the results it provides for our community.”

The Strategy is comprised of five priority areas: Information and Communication; Home; Finance, Employment, Volunteering and Retirement; Community, Connection and Neighbourhood; and Planning and Preparing for Later Life.

Residents will also benefit from five launch events taking place around the borough throughout July, where they can find out more about services and activities that support ageing well and get involved in shapring services. The list of events is available at: www.newham.gov.uk/ageingwell

Each area will have its own dedicated Action Plan, based on data and consultation with our residents and partners. Residents, partners and stakeholders will continue working together to deliver the strategy through the Resident Advisory Group, the Ageing Well working groups and Ageing Well Delivery Board.

The Strategy and Action Plan support the council’s commitment to Building a Fairer Newham, by reducing the health inequalities present in the borough, and helping residents to live healthier lives.
