All children in Newham are invited to join the Gadgeteers and take part in the Summer Reading Challenge, which this year will focus on science and technology.

The annual challenge is delivered by the Reading Agency through Newham’s libraries and funded by the Arts Council England. The theme for 2022 is Gadgeteers, a celebration of science and innovation. Children taking part will be able to join six fictional ‘Gadgeteers’, created by children’s writer and illustrator Julian Beresford.

To support this year’s theme, the Reading Agency worked with the Science Museum Group on a programme of books to encourage youngsters to use their curiosity and understand the science behind a whole range of interests, including fashion, technology, cooking and music.

Councillor Charlene McLean, Cabinet Member for Resident Engagement and Resident Experience said: “We are delighted our libraries are once again hosting the Summer Reading Challenge in partnership with the Reading Agency and Science Museum. This fantastic initiative is an innovative way to foster a lifelong love of reading in our children. Reading for pleasure has so many benefits – it helps to improve literacy, self-esteem and empathy and can help children to succeed in school. We hope as many of our children as possible take up the challenge this year, unlocking their imaginations and creativity with the help of the Gadgeteers.”

In its second year of a pilot scheme with the Reading Agency, Newham libraries has been working with primary schools in the borough to ensure that children are registered to take part .To continue the challenge, children will need to pop in to any Newham library with their collector folder, take out, read and return books. The library teams will award ‘Gadgeteer’ themed prizes and stickers for every two books read and a medal and certificate when children have reads six books or more.

Children can also take part in the Summer Reading Challenge online where they can unlock virtual reading rewards and enjoy a range of games, quizzes and downloadable activities.
