Newham Unlocked Festival returns with sizzling summer of celebrations

Newham Unlocked Festival returns this summer touring the borough over five consecutive Saturdays in August and September, featuring a roller-rink, live music and cabaret stage.

Newham Unlocked Festival will celebrate the unique culture, resilience, and creativity that defines the borough.

The free events will feature a bespoke line-up of roller skating classes and demos, street food, stage performances, creative workshops and a market area.

Invisible Wind Factory’s incredible Rollerdrome will be central to the events. Festival-goers can watch a performance or pull on some skates and join a free workshop with discos and DJs and more for all abilities and ages across the course of the 5 weeks.

The festival debuts on Saturday 20 August in Plashet Park and goes on to tour at Rathbone Market, Beckton Park, Central Park with a final event at West Ham Park on Saturday 17 September, where plans are being drawn up for a spectacular high-energy closing catwalk.

Live music, dance performances and DJs will keep the energy high and the entertainment flowing, with performances from local and London-based artists.

Acts include Mohammed Gueye, a West African percussionist, Newham based UD Music, queer cabaret collective Raze, Gospeloke with their Gospel-style Karaoke, Sami Rhymes an award-winning spoken word artist and Grand Union Orchestra, pioneers of cross-cultural music-making.

That’s not all, get stuck in at the making-area where festival-goers can make a new outfit with Griffi & Rosie, try out movement workshops with the Pappy Show, get involved in glow up sessions, or try our ecology workshops where we’ll be building a wormery and feeding the worms with any leftover festival food.

Visitors can come and listen to Somalian Tape stories with Dhaqan collective – then go on to showcase what they’ve made from the workshops on the Festival Catwalk.

Enjoy food from the street food vendors or eat at the new Community Kitchen, featuring local amateur cooks who will work with a professional chef to produce incredible and affordable dishes.

Each Saturday will see a bespoke line-up of performances and workshops as it moves location, creating spaces to encounter joy, community and the unexpected, with a packed line-up for people of all ages to enjoy.

The festival is produced by Newham Council and Independent Creative Producer Tracky Crombie. Tracky said; “The festivals are a chance to bring people together, engage with the culture of Newham in lots of different ways and find new connections. We need that now more than ever. There are elements to watch, to participate in, to try out, to make, to take home and hopefully everyone will feel welcome there, it’s all free and unticketed so you can just turn up and get stuck in.”

The festival is calling on local people to get involved, from dancers to cooks and people wanting to work in cultural events.

This is an opportunity to showcase your talent, learn a new skill or volunteer in the community. Newham residents can apply for a range of opportunities via the festival’s website www.newhamunlockedfestival.org

A full line-up of performances and workshops will be released soon, with more details about the festival available online at www.newhamunlockedfestival.org
