Newham kicks off Black History Month as part of its Newham Unlocked cultural programme.

Launch event ghetts 002

An evening with Plaistow born Grime MC, rapper and songwriter, Ghetts

To launch our programme, we are excited to be joined by Plaistow-born, award-winning British Grime MC, rapper and songwriter, Ghetts, who will talk about his career.

Ghetts is an award-winning artist known for his hard hitting lyrics and intricate rhyme schemes and has collaborated with well-known acts such as Kano, Stormzy, Ed Sheeran as well as touring on an international level. His latest album Conflict With An Interest (2021), came second on the official album chart and he won his first MOBO award for Best Male Act last year, recognising the best in Black music nationally and internationally.

The event will be co-facilitated by young people from Newham, Shanea Oldham and Zak Khalil.

This year, Newham Council will host a programme of activities and events responding to the theme of ‘Celebrating Black Identities’.

Special thanks to our community partners who have co-produced the programme with us, bringing their experience and expertise to curate activities and events for the wider Newham community.

This programme is part of Newham Unlocked, the Council’s cultural festival of events and activities which highlight the rich and diverse mix of creativity that exists in the borough and ensure that residents get the chance to experience their local vibrant and diverse cultural community.

Councillor Jane Lofthouse, Deputy Cabinet Member for Equalities, Social Integration and Culture said: “I am thrilled that celebrations for Black History Month are returning to Newham with the brilliant theme of Celebrating Black Identities, as we all know the massive impact the community has had on this borough and all aspects of its daily life. It’s so important that we take the time to recognise what’s gone before and acknowledge its impact on the brilliant contributions being made within our community in the present.”
