Newham commemorates Holocaust Memorial Day 2023 with the theme Ordinary People

Newham HMD 2023, holocaust, holocaust memorial.

Newham Council will commemorate this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day, with an event at the Old Town Hall in Stratford on Friday 27 January.

The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day this year is Ordinary People, this theme highlights the ordinary people who were persecuted, let it happen and perpetrated it. The theme also prompts us to consider how ordinary people can perhaps play a bigger role than we might imagine in challenging prejudice today.

The event at the Old Town Hall will feature speeches from the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Young Ambassadors, a variety of readings and performances from Newham school children and Newham Music’s Bridging Sounds Orchestra as well as a candle lighting ceremony.

To attend, book your place on Eventbrite.

Newham Council will also be presenting a film evening at Stratford Picturehouse, Theatre Square, London E15 1BX.  The evening starts at 7pm and includes a screening of ‘Where is Anne Frank’, an adaptation of Anne Frank’s internationally-loved classic The Diary of a Young Girl.  Kitty, the imaginary girl to whom Anne Frank wrote her famous diary, comes to life in the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. Her memories reawakened by reading the diary, believing that if she's alive, Anne must be alive as well, she sets out on a quest to find Anne. We follow Kitty as she travels across Europe and back to Anne Frank’s time, armed with the precious book, in search of her beloved friend.
