East Ham Nature Reserve Improvements (Shape Newham)

Shape Newham launched in 2019 to co-design and install imaginative and original public space improvement projects across the borough. Local residents and businesses were invited to a series of community events and workshops to choose the location and priorities for each project.

One location selected for investment as part of the Shape Newham programme was East Ham Nature Reserve located at Norman Rd, E6 6HN.

Local artist Matt Ponting worked with volunteers at the nature reserve and responded to feedback from the community and other stakeholders in order to design a series of improvements. The installation of these improvements has been named as “Hidden Creatures”.

Step inside and explore the secret treasures of East Ham Nature Reserve. A haven for hidden creatures, each with its own charming character. Your journey begins at the visitor centre with a colourful new entrance gate, welcome sign and mural. You’ll be guided by new trail markers to special spots where you can stop to enjoy the views, listen to sounds of cheerful chirps, take a deep breath, and enjoy a peaceful place that’s filled with history. Look out for noticeboards scattered throughout the habitat featuring messages about the reserve and ecological facts.

The project was designed by Matt Ponting and the installation was completed in Summer 2022.
