Alice Billings House Creative Studios

Alice billings house

Alice Billings House is continuing its transformation into a major cultural asset for Stratford and the wider borough.

The South Block opened to artists in February 2024, marking a significant milestone in the building’s revival. Creative Land Trust has now secured the funding required to complete the next phase of works, including the renovation of the North Block and the construction of a new pavilion between the two buildings.

The pavilion will overlook a newly landscaped, publicly accessible courtyard and will provide a flexible space for community events, workshops and exhibitions. The North Block will deliver 13 new affordable studios for artists and makers, further strengthening the site’s role as a hub for creative activity.

Once complete, Alice Billings House will operate as a vibrant cultural centre, supporting Newham’s ambitions as set out in Building Newham’s Creative Future. The project will bring new life to this Grade II listed former fire station while creating opportunities for local artists and residents to engage with arts and culture.

Project timeline

  1. 7 April 2026: Start on site for North Block renovation, with the Civic Courtyard used for site set-up
  2. Summer 2027: Artists move into the North Block, joining those already based in the South Block

The Council has secured £3.5 million from the National Heritage Lottery Fund to deliver this second phase of works. Alongside new studio spaces, the completed site will include a café and improved garden areas, enhancing the wider Town Hall complex and creating a more active, welcoming courtyard for the community.
