MOT testing

We can MOT your vehicle at our Central Depot Workshop in Jenkins Lane, Barking.

We are not linked to any commercial vehicle repair companies so we provide an impartial service. We will give you an unbiased report on your vehicle if it fails the MOT or emissions standard.

We do not carry out the vehicle repairs.

You must make an appointment before visiting us.


You can book an MOT appointment online, phone us on 020 8472 0343 or email mot@newham.gov.uk.
 
The MOT test takes approximately one hour.
 
We are open:
  • Monday to Friday* - 9am to 5pm
  • Saturday - closed
  • Sunday - closed
  • * except on bank holidays and during the Christmas period

Let us know which time and date suits you when booking. We may be able to give you a cancellation or short notice appointment.

The test can be completed up to one month prior to the expiry date of your MOT certificate. Any unused days will be added to the new certificate. On the day of your appointment please make sure you bring your MOT certificate with you.

You can leave your vehicle at the depot from 6.30am, however you must collect it by 5pm. Note that all vehicles are left at the owner's risk.
 
 

How much does an MOT cost?

The cost of the MOT depends on the class of your vehicle. Each test includes a free re-test as long as you return your vehicle within 10 working days.
 

Class 3 - £37.80

  • three wheeled vehicles (up to 450kg unladen weight)
  • vehicles with more than 460mm between tyre centres

Class 4 - £54.85

  • cars - with up to eight passenger seats
  • motor caravans
  • three wheeled vehicles (over 450kg unladen weight)
  • quads - with a maximum unladen weight of 400kg
  • goods vehicles - up to 550kg and with a maximum net power of 15kW
  • dual purpose vehicles
  • private hire vehicle and PSVs (up to 8 seats)
  • goods vehicles - up to 3,000kg
  • ambulances
  • taxis

Class 4A - including seat belt installation check - £64

 
Class 5

  • private passenger vehicle with 13-16 passenger seats - £59.55
  • vehicles and ambulances with more than 16 passenger seats and play buses - £80.65

Class 5A - including seat belt installation check

  • private passenger vehicle with 13-16 passenger seats - £80.50
  • vehicles and ambulances with more than 16 passenger seats and play buses - £124.50

Class 7 - £58.60

  • goods vehicles - over 3,000kg and up to 3,500kg

Duplicate test certificate - £10

 
 

How can I pay?

You can pay for the MOT test using cash or a credit/debit card. You can't pay with a cheque.

Follow the arrows to the designated parking areas then report to the MOT reception.
 
The number 300 bus, which goes to East Ham Station stops outside the depot at the Folkestone Road entrance.
 
 

What to do before the test

Before the MOT please check:
  • your tyres are correctly inflated and meet the requirements set by law
  • all your lights are working
  • your windscreen does not have any chips or cracks within the area swept by the wipers
  • the wipers are not worn.
 

What happens after the test

If your vehicle passes the MOT test, you will be given an MOT certificate which will be valid for up to 13 months from the date of issue.
 
If your vehicle does not pass, you will be given a record sheet containing details of the faults, which will have to be repaired for the re-test.
