Give notice of intention to marry or enter into civil partnership

Where to go to give notice

If you are both British or EU Nationals

You must both go to the register office for the district where you have been living or staying for the previous seven days, even if you plan to marry elsewhere.

To give notice in Newham you must book an appointment online at the top of this page. Your 'giving notice' appointment will take place at:

East Ham Town Hall
324 Barking Road
East Ham
E6 2RP

What happens after giving notice

When you attend your Notice of Marriage appointment you will be asked some simple questions about yourself and your partner.

The Registrar will complete a form for you to sign and this will then be displayed for 28 clear days in the Register Office, which the general public are allowed to see. Newham Register Office is located in East Ham Town Hall, Barking Road, East Ham, E6 2RP.

After the 28 (or 70 in some cases) clear days have expired, the Register Office will issue the authority to marry. The notice lasts for 12 months.

Please note you must wait at least 28 clear days after each of you have given notice before the marriage ceremony can take place.

The day you give notice is not the same day as your wedding or civil ceremony - do not turn up to give notice expecting to have your ceremony at the same time.

If you or your partner are foreign nationals

You can go together to give your notices at any register office in England that has been designated by the General Register Office

If you are marrying out of the district(s) where you live

Before you give notice, contact the local register office for that area to make sure officials will be available on the day.
