What are business rates?
Business rates are charges set by the government and charged to most businesses who operate out of non-domestic properties including:
- Holiday rental homes or guest houses
If you use a building or part of a building for non-domestic purposes, it’s likely you will have to pay business rates.
How the money is used
The government divides the money it raises between councils, according to the number of people living in the area.
The exception is the City of London, where special rules apply.
The money from business rates, along with income from council tax and other sources, pays for services provided by your council and other authorities in your area.
