Kensington Primary school launched a new “Young Leaders Programme” in September, providing training and coaching for 100 pupils and giving them the opportunity to take up leadership responsibilities within the school.

Young leaders can take roles on the School Council, Pupil Parliament, become Sports Leaders or Eco Champions. The programme encourages and supports children to share their skills and perspective on issues that matter in the classroom, playground, on an educational visit, and even in the community.

Jaffar Raza, Kensington Primary School’s Assistant Head Teacher and leader of the programme, said: “We are helping young people become leaders of the future so they can play an active role in the development of their communities and make a difference to our country.”

Kensington’s young leaders take on a range of responsibilities which include welcoming pupils who join the school outside the normal admission dates, providing support to those who speak English as an additional language, helping other children during play or lunch times and assisting the school’s first-aiders.

Jaffar added: “We believe in the significance of providing our pupils with opportunities and support to play an active role in decision making.

“We also aim to equip them for the challenges of the 21st century in line with our school’s vision and curriculum.”

He added: “Pupils at Kensington understand the importance of Democracy and all young leader roles were voted upon as part of Emotional Health Week in the Autumn Term.

“We do not only provide leadership training to these 100 children but also teach and discuss the qualities of being a good leader with all children, which helps to develop their confidence, resilience and independence.

“At Kensington Primary School, we believe every child is a leader.”
