What is council tax and who should pay it?

What is council tax?

Council tax is a local charge that helps councils fund the services they deliver. The money raised is used to maintain roads and street lighting, support services like street cleaning and rubbish collection, and provide community support such as ‘Meals on Wheels’.

A portion of your council tax also contributes to services run by the Greater London Authority (GLA), including the fire brigade, the police, and other London-wide organisations.
