Receiving a Section 8 Notice

What to do after receiving a Section 8 notice

Do these things as soon as you can

  • Keep paying your rent, if you can.
  • Avoid signing a deed of surrender unless you are ready to leave.
  • Try not to leave your home early unless you have somewhere safe and secure to stay.

Leaving before you have somewhere safe to live may affect the help the council can provide.

Keep records

  • Keep the notice and any letters or emails from your landlord
  • Write down key dates and what happens (for example, calls or visits)
  • Save screenshots of messages

Contact the council for advice or assistance

You can apply for advice or assistance as soon as you receive a Section 8 notice.

If you are at risk of homelessness

If you are within 56 days of the date the notice expires (or you are at risk of losing your home sooner), contact the council as soon as possible.
