Lower Lee Valley priority bridges programme

Lochnagar Bridge

London Borough of Tower Hamlets (LBTH) and London Borough of Newham (LBN) are working in partnership with Transport for London (TfL), the Greater London Authority (GLA) and the developer of the Ailsa Wharf scheme Country Garden on the construction of a new river bridge connecting Lochnagar Street in Poplar with the Lea River path in Newham. The new bridge is within a five minute walk of:

  • Existing residential communities at Teviot, Nairn Street and North Aberfeldy
  • Planned homes at Ailsa Wharf, Islay Wharf, Poplar Bus Depot, Leven Wharf and Leven Road Gasworks.

Planning Permission for the bridge is expected to be secured in October 2022. Led by the Tower Hamlets Regeneration Team, this new river bridge will provide surrounding communities with access to the Leaway and a route to jobs, social and transport infrastructure, including Star Lane DLR, Bromley By Bow and Canning Town interchanges. This bridge will provide a much shorter and better quality route than is currently available and without it walking and cycle journeys to the north need to use the busy A12. The bridge will open up new wider east-west connections from Star Lane in Newham to Chrisp Street town centre in Tower Hamlets and will facilitate access from new estate regeneration schemes in the west of the river to Three Mills and the Queen Elizabeth Park to the north for leisure, culture and recreation. The bridge will also open up a new connection into the Newham and Tower Hamlet green grid networks, connecting the Leaway with Poplar Parks with Langdon Park and beyond.
