Blackwall Tunnel Southbound Works At a Glance
What are the works?
TfL and its contractor are carrying out essential improvement works within the southbound Blackwall Tunnel, including structural repairs, waterproofing, resurfacing, replacement lighting, signs, and tunnel equipment.
When are the works taking place?
Phase 1: Weekend Tunnel Closures
Full southbound tunnel closures are planned on:
- 13 to 17 November 2026
- 20 to 24 November 2026
- 27 November to 1 December 2026
- 4 to 8 December 2026
- 11 to 15 December 2026
Works will generally operate from Friday 10pm until Tuesday 5am.
Phase 2: Overnight Closures
From 15 December 2026 until 24 September 2027, overnight closures are planned to facilitate electrical and mechanical upgrades, including new lighting, containment systems, cladding, signage and VMS equipment.
Working hours: 10pm to 5am on weekday nights.
Phase 3: Final Commissioning and Resurfacing
Further weekend closures are planned on:
- 20 to 23 August 2027
- 27 to 30 August 2027
- 3 to 6 September 2027
- 10 to 13 September 2027
These closures will facilitate final switch-over activities, removal of redundant equipment and final resurfacing works.
How will traffic be affected?
The southbound Blackwall Tunnel will be closed during the periods listed above. Road users should allow extra journey time and follow signed diversion routes where required.
