Almas's Story: Life as an international student
When Almas Ali Mohammed arrived in the UK as an international student, he experienced many of the same challenges faced by other students adapting to life in a new country.
As part of the Citizen Scientists programme, he wanted to better understand those experiences and give a voice to students whose struggles often go unseen.
Drawing on interviews and conversations with fellow migrant students, Almas explored the realities of balancing study, work, finances and everyday life far from home.
His research found that many students faced significant financial pressures, from tuition fees and living costs to the challenge of finding part-time work. Others spoke about the difficulties of sharing accommodation, meeting academic deadlines and building support networks in an unfamiliar environment.
A recurring theme throughout the research was isolation. While many students appeared to be coping well, some described feelings of loneliness and uncertainty as they adjusted to a new culture and way of life.
Despite these challenges, Almas also heard stories of resilience, ambition and determination. Students shared how they were building new friendships, developing confidence and creating opportunities for their future.
His research highlighted the importance of understanding the personal stories behind the statistics and recognising the contribution international students make to communities across Newham.
As Almas reflected:
"Every migrant student has a story, and it's important to listen."
He hopes his research encourages greater awareness, empathy and support for students navigating life in a new country and reminds people that even small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference.
