Citizen's Scientists Stories

Hamdan's story: Starting over and building a future

When Hamdan Shir Ayaz moved to the UK from Afghanistan, he brought with him professional experience, qualifications and ambitions for the future. Through the Citizen Scientists programme, he wanted to better understand the experiences of other Afghan migrants rebuilding their lives and careers in a new country.

Drawing on interviews and conversations with members of the Afghan community, Hamdan explored the challenges many people face when trying to continue their careers after migrating.

His research uncovered stories of resilience, determination and untapped potential. He spoke to professionals who had been unable to continue working in their chosen fields due to barriers linked to immigration status, qualifications or access to opportunities.

Among the stories shared were a doctor working as an Uber driver, a national boxing champion struggling to enter the UK sports industry, and an Afghan woman who successfully rebuilt her career as a mathematics teacher and artist.

Through his research, Hamdan found that while many migrants face significant challenges, they also bring valuable skills, experience and ideas that can contribute to their communities.

One of the key messages from his research was the importance of recognising people's potential and supporting pathways into employment and entrepreneurship.

As Hamdan reflected:

"Every story matters, whether it highlights a success or a failure."

To bring his findings to life, Hamdan also created a unique woven Afghan carpet featuring quotes and stories from his research, demonstrating how community experiences can be shared through both research and creative expression.

His hope is that more people are encouraged to pursue their ambitions, build on their skills and contribute to the communities they now call home.
