Fire safety at home: advice and support.

Who carries out fire risk assessments?

These are carried out regularly for council-managed buildings, including all tall tower blocks.

The Council is responsible for ensuring buildings and communal areas are safe, carrying out risk assessments, and following up on any required safety actions.

Residents are responsible for following fire safety guidance inside their homes, such as testing smoke alarms and reporting any fire hazards or concerns to the council. They also have a responsibility to keep communal areas clear.

Fire risk responsibilities summary

  • Qualified fire risk assessor: a specially trained professional conducts the assessment and identifies physical hazards, risks, and actions.

  • The Council: makes sure the assessment is completed, reviews the action plan, and implements any required safety measures.

  • Residents: test smoke alarms, keep escape routes clear, report hazards or concerns.
