Apply for a Year 7 secondary school place
Take time to read our composite prospectus We Are Going To Secondary School (PDF) as this explains the whole process in full detail.
National closing day for on time applications Sunday 31 October 2021 23:59pm.
Applications received after national closing day will be known as late applications. These applications cannot be considered for places until all on time applicants have their places. For all popular schools all places are usually already offered to on time applicants before late applicants can be considered, so applying on time is really important.
Parents/carers can apply for a year 7 place for September 2022 through the eAdmissions website from 1 September 2021.
Applicants will need to register and create a password before they can start their application.
All primary and junior schools in Newham offer support with applying through eAdmissions and provide access to a device to apply online for those who need it.
Any documents supporting an application should be submitted via eAdmissions. These can be added or added to the application until national closing day.
Supplementary Information Forms (SIFs) must not be submitted via eAdmissions. They must be sent directly to the schools who require them, in Newham this is only applies to St Angela’s Ursuline School and St Bonaventure’s.
Email confirmation of successful submission
After successfully submitting an application a reference number will be sent to the applicant’s email address, it will look a bit like this 316-2022-09-E-001234. If a reference number is not received it means the application has not been successfully submitted. Applicants can easily log in to eAdmissions to check their application and send it again.
Applying using a paper application form
We strongly recommend that all families apply for a year place for September 2022 via the eAdmissions portal as it is secure and guarantees delivery. For families who do not have access to the internet, they should first visit their child’s primary school who will be happy to give them access to a device and to the internet so they can apply via eAdmissions. For families who do not want to apply via eAdmissions and prefer a paper form call the Newham contact centre on 020 8430 2000 to request a copy.
Changing preferences or other information – on time applications only
Until 31 October 2021 applicants can still makes changes to their eAdmissions online application.
- Add or remove existing preferences
- Change the rank (priority) order of preferences
- Change or add preference reasons
- Add sibling or other information
- Change their address within Newham
- Add more supporting documents
New applications or changing of preferences from 31 October 2021 to 31 August 2022
Late applications can be made online through eAdmissions up until the 19 August 2022. New applications from the 20 August 2022 to 31 August 2022 must be made using a paper application (see above).
Applicants cannot make any changes to their submitted on time application form after the national closing day. To make a change to their preferred school(s) or the order of preference, applicants will need to complete a change of preference form.
For all other changes applicants will need to contact Pupil Services ([email protected]) for further advice.
Supplementary Information Forms
Some schools ask for a Supplementary Information Form (SIF) to go with an application. This mainly applies to faith schools, the forms can be downloaded or obtained from the school. A SIF is not required if parent/carers do not want to be considered under any of the faith priority groups.
Supplementary Information Forms for entry in the academic year September 2022 to July 2023
Remember to complete and return the SIF to the school by the local deadline, for all faith schools located in Newham this is 31 October 2021. For schools outside of Newham the deadline maybe different, always check with the school.
If a Supplementary Information Form is not submitted, the school will not be able to prioritise a child in any priority group other than the last one ‘All Other Applicants’.
Important: A Supplementary Information Form is not an application form. If an applicant submits a Supplementary Information Form without submitting the main application it cannot be considered.
If an application is received after the closing date (31 October 2021) in most circumstances it will not be considered until all those who applied on time have been given their places.
So, if you apply late your chances of getting a place at the school you want are much less than if you apply on time.
What happens after applications have been submitted?
All applications are given to the school’s admission authority for them to determine the ranked order (priority for a place) of each application, by applying their oversubscription criteria when they have more applications than places available. If the preferred school is outside of Newham, the application will be shared securely with the admission authority by the Pan London process.
For schools in Newham, including most academies, the local authority does the ranking. Where the school is an academy their admissions committee (usually the governing body) must agree the ranking before offers can be made.
Admissions authorities are not advised of the rank/preference order of applications when applying rank.
Once all schools across London and the Home Counties have agreed their ranking the highest offer for each child is determined by their home borough.
Where it has not been possible to offer a child at any of the schools their parents/carers named as a preference on their application form, their home local authority will make arrangements for the child’s education. In Newham we allocate an alternative place at the closest school to the child’s home that has a place available – this may not be close to the child’s home but will be in Newham.
When will school places outcomes be notified
For applications received by the 31 October 2021 (national closing date) notification of the outcome of their application will be issued on national primary offer day, Tuesday 1 March 2022 (national offer day).
Online applicants will receive the information via an email on the evening of 1 March 2022 which will advise them to log into their eAdmissions account.
Applicants who applied via a paper form will be sent a letter by 1st class post on Tuesday 1 March 2022.
Online applicants can request a paper copy of their outcome letter by emailing [email protected] with the subject as ‘Paper copy letter request’.
Late applicants will also receive their outcome on 1 March 2022 if they applied by 15 February 2022. Applications received after this date will have their outcomes issued by 4 March 2022 or 10 days after submitting their application if received after 1 March 2022.
Accepting and refusing the school offered or allocated
In Newham to avoid families worrying about losing their place we automatically accept all offers or alternative allocations unless:
The school is outside of Newham, then the parents/carers must formally accept via their eAdmissions account or by emailing [email protected]
The parents/carers fully completes and submits the refusal form which was sent with their offer letter to [email protected]
A place will not be withdrawn even if a family has refused it unless they can prove they do not need a place in Newham or they have made suitable alternative arrangements for their child’s secondary education.
