Parents/carers can apply for a secondary school place for September 2021 through the eAdmissions website from 1 September 2020.

All primary schools in Newham offer support with applying through eAdmissions and provide access to a device to apply online for those who need it.

Applicants will need to register and create a password before they can start their application.

The national closing date for applications is 31 October 2020. If we receive an application after the closing date we treat it as late.  This means it cannot be considered until all on time applicants have been offered their places.  For many schools all the places will have been offered to on time applicants before late applications are even considered.

Any documents to support your an application should be submitted via eAdmissions.

Do not send supplementary information forms (SIFs) (see below) with the online application. SIFs must be sent directly to the schools the schools who require them, in Newham this is only applies to the Catholic schools, St. Angela’s Ursuline and St. Bonaventure’s.

If parent/carers do not want to apply online they can request a paper form by emailing [email protected].  Remember we cannot guarantee receipt of forms sent by post.

Email confirmation

After submitting an application a reference number will be sent to the applicant’s email address, it will look a bit like this 316-2021-09-E-001234. If a reference number is not received it means the application has not been submitted. Parents/carers can easily log in to the website, to check their application and send it again.  Remember national closing day is 31st October 2020.

Late applications

If we receive your application after the closing date (31 October 2019) we will not consider it until all those who applied on time have been given their places.

So, if you apply late your chances of getting a place at the school you want are much less than if you apply on time.

Changing preferences or other information

Until 31 October 2020 applicants can still makes changes to their eAdmissions online application:

  • Change their preferences
  • Add or remove existing preferences
  • Change the rank order of their preferences
  • Change or add preference reasons
  • Add sibling information
  • Change their address within Newham

From the 1 November, to make changes you must complete a change of preference form and return directly to Pupil Services, these changes cannot be made online.  In most instances these will be considered as late changes.

Supplementary information forms

Some schools ask for a Supplementary Information Form (SIF) to go with an application. This mainly applies to faith schools, the forms can be downloaded or obtained from the school. A SIF is not required if you do not want to be considered under priority groups except ‘All other applicants’

Remember to complete and return the supplementary infromation form to the school by the deadline, for St. Angela’s Ursuline and St. Bonaventure’s this is 31 October 2020.  For schools outside of Newham the deadline maybe different, always check with the school.  

If a Supplementary Information Form (SIF) is not submitted, the school will not be able to prioritise a child in any priority group other than the last one ‘All Other Applicants’.

Important! A Supplementary Information Form (SIF) is not an application form.  If an applicant submits a Supplementary Information Form (SIF) without submitting the main application it cannot be considered. 

Late applications

What happens after applications have been submitted?

All applications are given to the schools admission authority for them to determine the ranked order (priority for a place) of each application, by applying their oversubscription criteria when they have more applications than places available.

For schools in Newham, including most academies, the local authority does the ranking.  Where the school is an academy their admissions committee (usually the governing body) must agree the ranking before offers can be made.

Admissions committees are not advised of the rank/preference order of applications when applying rank.

Once all schools across London and the Home Counties have agreed their ranking the highest offer for each child is determined by their home borough.  

Where it has not been possible to offer a child at any of the schools their parents/carers named as a preference on their application form, their home local authority will make arrangements for the child’s education.  In Newham we allocate an alternative place at the closest school to the child’s home that has a place available – this may not be close to the child’s home but will be in Newham.

All schools are required by law to have admission arrangements which include their oversubscription criteria which shows how applicants are ranked if the school receives more applications than places available.

When will school places outcomes be notified

For applications received by the 31 October 2020 (national closing date) notification of the outcome of their application will be issued on national secondary offer day, 1 March 2021.

Online applicants will receive the information via an email on the evening of 1 March 2021 which will advise them to log into their eAdmissions account.

Applicants who applied via a paper form will be sent a letter by 1st class post on 1 March 2021.

Anyone can request a paper copy of their outcome letter by emailing [email protected] with the subject as ‘Paper copy letter request’.

Late applicants will also receive their outcome on 1 March if they applied by the middle of February 2021.  If applicants are receive after this date outcomes will be issued by 4 March or 10 days after their application if received after 1 March 2021.

Accepting and refusing the school offered or allocated.

In Newham to avoid families worrying about losing their place we automatically accept all offers unless:

The school is outside of Newham, then the parents/carers must formally accept via their eAdmissions account or by emailing [email protected]


The parents/carers fully completes and submits the refusal form which was sent with their offer letter to [email protected]

A place will not be withdrawn even if a family has refused it unless they can prove they do not need a place in Newham or they have made suitable alternative arrangements for their child’s secondary education.
