If you experience a problem with a public electric vehicle charge point, please report it as soon as possible so that the issue can be investigated and resolved.
Faults with the charging equipment
If the charge point is not working, displays an error message, will not start a charging session, or has a problem with the charging cable or payment system, please contact the relevant Charge Point Operator (CPO). The operator's name and contact details are displayed on the charging unit and can also be found within the operator's mobile app or website.
Damage to the charging bay or surrounding highway
If you wish to report damage to the charging bay, road markings, signs, bollards or any other highway infrastructure associated with the charge point, you can email us at ElectricChargers@newham.gov.uk

Who can use Newham's electric vehicle charging bays?
Between 8:00am and 9:00pm, the charging bays are reserved for electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid vehicles that are actively charging.
Between 9:00pm and 8:00am, any vehicle may park in the bays, subject to the relevant Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) restrictions.
Can non-electric vehicles park in the charging bays?
Yes. Outside the operational hours of 8:00am to 9:00pm, any vehicle may park in the bays, provided it complies with the applicable CPZ restrictions.
Is there a time limit for using a charging bay?
Yes. During the operational hours of 8:00am to 9:00pm, vehicles must:
- be actively charging;
- not exceed the maximum stay of 4 hours; and
- not return to the same bay within 2 hours.
Please always check the roadside signs, as restrictions may vary at some locations.
Do I need to register to use a charge point?
No. Registration with Newham Council is not required. Charging instructions, payment methods and tariffs are provided by the relevant Charge Point Operator and are displayed on each charging unit.
Do I need a Newham Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) permit to charge my vehicle?
No. Any compatible electric vehicle may use the charging bays while actively charging, regardless of where the vehicle is registered.
Who pays for the electricity?
The driver is responsible for paying for the electricity used to charge their vehicle. Charges are set by the relevant Charge Point Operator, and payment methods are displayed on the charging unit.
Can all electric vehicles use the charge points?
The Newham's standard public charge points use Type 2 connections, which are compatible with most modern electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Drivers should check their vehicle requirements and ensure they have the appropriate charging cable.
How does Newham decide where to install new charge points?
Every proposed location is assessed against a range of criteria, including resident requests, existing and forecast demand, available electrical capacity, technical feasibility, parking considerations, accessibility and road safety. This helps ensure new charge points are installed where they will provide the greatest benefit to the community.
Can I request a new charging location?
Yes. Residents are encouraged to submit suggestions for future charging locations using our online request form.
Please note that submitting a request does not guarantee that a charge point will be installed. Every suggested location must undergo a detailed assessment before it can be considered for delivery.
Why can't a charge point be installed outside my home?
The programme is designed to create a publicly accessible charging network rather than provide individual charge points for specific properties. As public highway space is limited, locations are selected to maximise accessibility and benefit the greatest number of residents.
Who owns and maintains the charge points?
Newham Council works with Charge Point Operators (CPOs) to deliver the borough's public charging network. The Charge Point Operator is responsible for installing, operating and maintaining the charging equipment, while the Council identifies suitable locations and manages the necessary approvals and highway requirements.
Can I install a charge point at my home?
Yes. If you have off-street parking, you may be able to install a private charge point. Please refer to the Installing a home charge point section for guidance on planning requirements.
Can I run a charging cable across the pavement?
The Council's current position is that, by exception the interim use of a suitable cable protection product in certain circumstances. Please see the Installing a home charge point section for the current guidance and conditions.
Why are EV charging bays installed when they appear underused?
Electric vehicle demand is expected to increase significantly over the coming years as more drivers transition away from petrol and diesel vehicles. The purpose of the programme is to provide infrastructure ahead of demand and ensure residents without access to private charging have the opportunity to make the transition to electric vehicles.
