Newham roads and footways

Street cleansing

We sweep busy shopping areas and town centres daily, including weekends.

We sweep every residential street at least once a week (Monday to Friday). We will only sweep residential streets that have been officially adopted by the Council.

Our sweeping schedules are completed on an area basis. Newham is divided into three areas comprised of the Borough’s electoral wards as listed below.

Area 1 includes the following wards: Beckton, Canning Town North, Canning Town South, Custom House, Plaistow North, Plaistow South, Plaistow West & Canning Town East, Royal Albert and Royal Victoria.

Area 2 includes the following wards: Forest Gate North, Forest Gate South, Green Street East, Green Street West, Maryland, Stratford, Stratford Olympic Park and West Ham.

Area 3 includes the following wards: Boleyn, East Ham, East Ham South, Little Ilford, Manor Park, Plashet and Wall End.

To find out the day your street is swept, please refer to the relevant area schedule.

Please view the schedules here.

We change our sweeping schedules during autumn to respond to heavy leaf fall. This is usually between October and December. Additional resources are provided and longer hours are worked to clear autumn leaves from streets as quickly as possible. These resources are deployed in streets with the heaviest leaf fall.

Weed Control in Newham

We manage weeds on public highways and footpaths to keep public areas safe, clean, and accessible, and to prevent damage to drains, paving, and road surfaces.

Trained professionals, using a specialist herbicide, treat visible weeds three times a year, between March and October.

Each round of treatment takes between six to eight weeks to complete, depending on weather conditions.

Treatments are only carried out in dry, calm conditions, not during or immediately after rainfall, in high or gusty winds, or in extremely high temperatures, to ensure effectiveness.

How long does it take for a treatment to take effect?

It will normally take up to two weeks for a treatment to have a visible impact. Removing weeds too soon will result in rapid regrowth. Once the treatment has taken effect, the residue weeds are removed by our street cleansing team.

Where will the Council not treat weeds?

We are not responsible for treating weeds on private land or property owned by other public bodies or private organisations. We will only treat streets that have been officially adopted by the Council.
