Road gritting

If there is a risk of snow or icy conditions, we treat our roads with grit and salt. We cannot treat all of our roads so our priority is busier roads such as bus routes and main roads.

Roads we grit

Our interactive priority road map shows the roads that we grit and clear snow from.
To use the map:
  • select 'Map features'
  • choose 'Winter gritting routes' from the list.

You can also enter your postcode to find out if your road is one of our priority routes.

Transport for London is responsible for clearing and gritting red route roads.

When and how we decide to grit

From October to March we get regular forecast information from the Met Office.

This gives us predictions of the possibility of freezing road temperatures and snow over the next 24 hours, and up to five days ahead.

The information helps us to decide when we will need to grit roads and footpaths.

Wherever possible, we grit and salt our roads outside of peak traffic times and before the freezing conditions arrive.
