Spearheaded by Newham Council’s Place Making team, the Colours of Newham and Brighter Alleyways projects are part of a borough-wide programme to improve local high streets and public spaces, directly responding to priorities set out in the Newham High Streets Strategy (PDF).
Colours of Newham is a community-led project funded by the UK Government through the £40 million Levelling Up Fund awarded to Newham Council.
Across neighbourhoods including Little Ilford, Manor Park, Green Street and Forest Gate large-scale murals, creative lighting, and public realm improvements have transformed key buildings, alleyways and walking routes. From landmark artworks like the Jimi Hendrix mural in Forest Gate to community-led designs at Manor Park Library, each project reflects local stories, heritage and culture, ensuring that Newham’s diversity is visible in its streets.
The Brighter Alleyways programme complements this work by upgrading well-used routes with better lighting, improved surfaces, wayfinding and creative interventions, helping residents feel safer and more confident walking and cycling. Together, these projects create a connected network of vibrant, accessible spaces that encourage active travel, reduce anti-social behaviour and strengthen neighbourhood pride.
