Newham’s Commitment
Newham Council continues to take action to ensure women and girls can live free from violence and abuse.
We are:
- Delivering education programmes in schools to promote healthy relationships
- Providing training for businesses and professionals to recognise and respond to abuse
- Expanding community-based support through local partners
- Working with the police, Public Health and voluntary organisations to hold perpetrators to account
- Lighting up landmarks in orange as a visible message of solidarity

Schools Engagement 2024/25: Educating Young People on Respect and Consent
As part of Newham Council’s commitment to ending violence against women and girls, more than 5,600 students across the borough have taken part in educational programmes during the 2024/25 school year.
Little Fish Theatre Company delivered a series of interactive plays in secondary schools, tackling issues of misogyny and violence against women and girls. The performances encouraged open discussions about respect, equality and consent, helping young people reflect on the impact of social media, emotional manipulation and exploitation. Feedback from 2,970 students showed a clear increase in awareness and understanding of abuse, consent and digital boundaries.
Talk Consent worked with pupils in Years 5–8 through workshops and assemblies exploring personal boundaries, bodily autonomy and online safety. The sessions empowered students to challenge stereotypes, build respectful behaviours and understand the importance of consent. A total of 2,711 students took part, with participants reporting greater confidence in identifying unsafe situations and supporting peers.
Together, these initiatives have reached 5,681 students across Newham, promoting positive attitudes, healthy relationships and safer communities for all.
