Beckton and Royal Docks

Beckton Walking and Cycling Project

The Beckton Walking and Cycling Project is focused on upgrading physical infrastructure in order to:

  • make walking and cycling easy, safe and convenient
  • reduce air pollution
  • promote more high street economic activity

These upgrades to physical infrastructure could include, for example:

  • cycle tracks and lanes
  • wayfinding signage
  • pedestrian crossings (including zebra crossings)
  • improved footways
  • traffic calming
  • changes to junctions
  • improved lighting and CCTV
  • trees and greenery

The project is using “Levelling Up Funding” which has been awarded to Newham from central government. The scheme will be delivered between April 2022 and April 2024, in line with the Levelling Up Fund.

Scheme Area

We welcome feedback from local people to support changes to anywhere in Beckton as outlined in the project area map. We are particularly interested in making improvements for walking and cycling in the focus areas.

Focus areas

Beckton Town Centre

Beckton Town Centre is a hub of activity that includes access to transport including Beckton DLR station and Beckton bus station. However, we recognise that it can be a challenging environment for people to move around, particularly by walking and cycling.

The scope of potential improvements to walking and cycling includes access to and through the wider Asda shopping area.

This is a focus area for the Becton Walking and Cycling project because the Levelling Up Funding is about both movement of people as well as connecting people to opportunities within town centres.

Tollgate Road

Tollgate Road is a key east-west corridor, which runs through the Beckton area and supports access to residential, community, and commercial destinations.

We acknowledge that it can be a difficult environment for walking and cycling, including the speed and volume of traffic, junctions, and crossing the road.

Woolwich Manor Way

Woolwich Manor Way connects East Ham High Street South, the Greenway, the northern end of Cycleway 3, and Beckton Town Centre.

It is particularly significant because it forms the only major north-south connection across the A13 within the project area. The nearest alternative crossings are half a mile away each direction, and are for pedestrians bridges only.

Beckton Corridor

Beckton Corridor is a key pedestrian route, separated from car traffic, that connects Beckton DLR station to residential areas, Beckton Park, and Royal Albert Way (including Royal Albert DLR station). It forms part section 15 of the Capital Ring, a 78-mile orbital walkway consisting of open space, nature reserves, and Sites of Specific Scientific Interest.

New proposed zebra crossings

Based on safety and pedestrian and cyclist needs, some early design work has been undertaken to identify two proposed locations for zebra crossings.

We Want to Hear From You

This project is relying on the views of local residents and businesses in order to design further improvements that will most effectively support walking and cycling. We would like your local knowledge and feedback in order to understand what kinds of improvements are most needed and exactly where interventions should be made. We are particularly interested in the Beckton Town Centre and Tollgate Rd areas but comments on any area within the area outlined on the map are welcome.

Resident survey (online)

An online survey will run from late November to 1 January.

Disabled residents workshop

Running in late November, the Council is hosting a workshop that is tailor-made for disabled residents to provide feedback that will help our designers to draft infrastructure improvements. This workshop will be accessible to all disabilities, and will provide an opportunity for people to discuss any specific mobility issues they face in the Beckton area, and enable people to propose infrastructure improvements.

The workshop is being run by Transport for All, a ‘disabled-led group striving to increase access to transport and streetspace across the UK.’
