Originally proposed by the School Food Plan (2013), taking a ‘whole school approach to food’ is a concept we are working towards in all schools across Newham. Schools are catalysts for sustainable food system change, integrating food, health and education across the school day.
This holistic approach is key to nurturing young people with a positive relationship with food and health. It addresses the provision of school meals, the functioning of school dining halls, a healthy culture around food and educating children and young people by using food to learn. It includes practical teaching, learning activities and the participation of pupils and buy-in of all members of school staff and the wider school community (including parents, catering providers and school governors or trustees). This is a constant journey of development and council are here to support schools every step of the way.
It is going to essential for 'Generation Just Transition' as they grow to become adults who eat well, sustainably. See the Newham Just Transition Plan here.
