Licences for animal related businesses

Register animals used as exhibits or performing

If you want to keep or train animals for public performances you need to obtain a licence  with the London Borough of Newham. It is against the law not to obtain a licence.

This is the case for a range of performance types including:

  • On the stage
  • On television
  • In the theatre
  • On film
  • In an exhibition.
  • At a park event

The licence fee is £350 per year and lasts for three years.

It is your legal responsibility to make sure that you have a current licence.


We will check that you are keeping the animals in the conditions which meet health, welfare and safety standards, and we will ask you to show us your certificate of registration.

If you show or train any performing animal without registering it you receive an unlimited fine, a prison sentence or both and all costs incurred by the London Borough of Newham . You may also be banned from showing or training performing animals in the future.
