Housing and Energy

Advice and support for homeowners & tenants on saving energy and keeping warm

What is retrofitting?

Retrofitting is the process of fitting new energy saving measures to buildings that were previously built without them. This can range from small measures such as LED lighting and draught proofing to big changes like wall insulation and solar panels.

There are various government schemes to help people install energy efficient measures in their homes to save money. Click the links below to find out more about the schemes to see if it’s right for you:

Repowered Community Newham

Newham is the first London borough to take part in Repowering London’s new Repowered Community programme. Over the next five years, the programme plans to deliver:

  • Lower energy costs for up to 750 households
  • Retrofit support for 200 homes (making them less expensive to heat and healthier to live in)
  • Locally generated green electricity that will supply 500 homes
  • Community-owned heat generation and supply for 50 homes, and
  • Other community benefits, such as employment for local people.

The Newham programme has been made possible by funding from the National Lottery Community Fund.

The Repowered Community is designed to deliver people-led change that brings together communities and Councils. As part of this, Repowering London has put together a Community Steering Group to lead decision-making and help shape change in the borough. You can learn more about the Repowered Community Newham here. Or if you have questions about how to get involved, please email communityenergynewham@gmail.com.

Repowering London is also now working with blocks of flats to explore how buildings can be upgraded with energy efficiency improvements to make residents’ homes warmer, healthier and future-proofed. The programme will support landlords, managing agents and residents to discover together what improvements can be made to their homes and buildings. You can learn more about this project on the Repowering London website.
