Find and release a towed vehicle

Clamped vehicles

The council does not clamp vehicles.

If a vehicle has been clamped, it will be by a private company or possibly an enforcement agency (bailiff).

There should be a notice on the vehicle with contact details and what you need to do to release the vehicle.

Clamping if a vehicle is untaxed

A vehicle may have been clamped by the DVLA if it was untaxed and:

  • on a public road, even if it had a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN)
  • not on a public road but it did not have a SORN

Clamping due to unpaid debt

Check the notice on the vehicle for the contact details of the enforcement agency (bailiff).

The vehicle may have been clamped by an enforcement agency (bailiff) instructed by the council if you have unpaid debts to the council.

Parking on private land

It against the law to clamp a vehicle on private property.

Some car parks are owned by private companies, who may issue parking tickets.

Parking tickets on private land are called Parking Charge Notices; these are not the same as Penalty Charge Notices.

Find information on how to appeal a Parking Charge Notice on the Citizen's Advice website.
