Admissions to secondary school

Starting in Year 7 - September 2022

For all children born between 1 September 2010 and 31 August 2011, their parents/carers must apply for a secondary class place for them to start school in the academic year September 2022/2023.

For information on how to apply for entry into other year groups in secondary school, go to our In year admissions page.

Starting year 7 in a secondary school

In London since 2004, the 33 London boroughs and some of the Home Counties operate a Pan London coordinated scheme 2022/23 (PDF). Every family must apply to their home borough.  This means if a family live in Newham they must apply through Newham even if their child attends a primary school outside of Newham or they are only interested in a secondary school in another borough.

Remember, parents/carers must apply for a place, even if:

  • They want their child to go to the local school.

  • Their child has an older brother or sister at the school.

The law does not allow us to reserve secondary school places.

How parents/carers should decide on their preferences

Newham would like all families of year 6 children  to want to start their secondary education in Newham and continue on into local further education. Every family has the right to name their own preferences but to make them count these points should be considered:

  • Take time to attend open evenings and open days for as many schools as possible not just those you were initially thinking about. Sometimes a visit can give a very different perspective on a school
  • Read all the information about all schools you were considering and all local schools. Don’t focus on Ofsted reports and league tables as these can be out of date.
  • Undertake the journey to each of the schools you  are considering and think about what it will be like in the winter when it gets dark early.
  • Find out about the cost of travel, remembering ZIP Oyster cards only provide free travel on buses and trams.

We recognise some families may prefer a school outside of Newham or a selective school. For these you should focus on the points above even more strongly.
